I glanced at the three dimensional heads up display that showed me a map of the system. The thing was full of all sorts of information, and with a thought I dismissed all but the most important.

Which was mostly the Royal Guard flying through the system stopping anyone and everyone they found. Clearly they all thought they were going to find the people who’d done this by shutting everything down, but I had my doubts.

“Are we showing any freighters that are acting out of the ordinary?” I asked. “Anything at all that might indicate someone trying to make an escape from the system?”

“Negative,” my AI chimed in. “All traffic in the system is running the normal transponder signals.”

I bit back a couple of choice phrases. The freighter I’d fired on over the city was running a regular transponder as well. As far as anyone was concerned that was a normal freighter doing its normal business of flying low over the imperial city in a desperate attempt to break free of a royal order to cease and desist.

I sat back in the cockpit and thought this through. Only before I could think it through too much I had another unpleasant surprise. One of those Royal Guard units broke free from pursuing a freighter, no doubt something from Revas’ fleet, and headed straight for me.

“Damnation,” I breathed. I could drop out of fold space, but I was already making good time away from Selevas Prime. Besides, this was a simple enforcer unit. It’s not like they would be able to do much against me.

“Unidentified craft,” the enforcer chimed over the comm system. “Please identify and remove yourself from fold space. Prepare to be boarded.”

I cursed a few more times. I’d hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but here we were. There were ways out of this. The only problem with those ways out of this was it involved using access codes that would probably only work a few times before word got back to mother and she told them to bring me in.

“This is an imperial starfighter on official business of the throne,” I sent back, hoping it wouldn’t come to the point of having to send out the proper identification. “You’ll leave off if you know what’s good for you.”

“Imperial starfighter identification acknowledged,” the enforcer said, but then he went on to show the kind of dedication to the job that would’ve been admirable if I wasn’t trying to make an escape from the damned system. “Please provide proper authorization codes.”

I mumbled a few unpleasant things about the chastity of this enforcer’s mother as I put through the proper codes. It was a pity I didn’t have a proper stealth ship, though that technology was something mother would never let me play with.

No, that was the sort of thing that was only allowed with her Inquisitors. The kind of bastards who would be looking for me soon enough. I really hoped that Garvin didn’t get into too much trouble with them for letting me go.
